Abstract

This descriptive study was conducted to identify the level of stress and mental health status of firefighters who are on the constant alert to protect people from disasters such as fire, gas, explosions, floods, and mass traffic accidents, etc.
The subjects were consisted of 183 firefighters drawn by convenience from Kyungi-Seoul areas. The data were collected from Sept. 21. to Oct. 6, 1999 by structured questionnaires.

The questionnaire for stress was developed by the researchers after in depth interviews of 20 firefighters. For mental health status, it was deployed Multi
dimensional self report Symptom Check List-90-Revision by Derogatis et al. (1984) . The research tool for adaptive behavior was developed by the researchers revising the questionnaires of Bell (1977) , and Jarowiec and Power(1981).
The data were analyzed by SAS/+PC utilizing descriptive statistics, t-test, F-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
The results of the study were as follows ;
Stress of the firefighters were shown as social factors, emergent situational factors, in such order
There were significant relationship between religion and task factors, assigned tasks and emergent situational factors, and length of employment and organization related factors.
There showed significant relationship between length of employment and problem centered adaptive behaviors.
The mental health status of firefighters showed high in obsession, somatization, anxiety, sensitivity, depression in that order.
There were significant relationship between organization related stress factor and mental health status of somatization, obsession, sensitivity, depression, anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis.

Based on the above findings, the following suggestions are made.
Stress management is necessary for the firefighters who are on the constant alert and stress level is high.
The research is necessary regarding stress, adaptive behaviors, and mental health status for those who are working on crisis situations such as policemen, nurses, etc.
